Update for Baylink Ferry Repower Project – Dec 22

Baylink Rider Alert
Update on Plans for Ferry Repower Project
Posted December 22, 2010

Based on input and feedback received to date from the Baylink Ridership, the City of Vallejo … with valuable assistance from WETA … is making alternate plans regarding ferry service schedules during the Ferry Repower Project.

The City and the Water Emergency Transportation Authority are pursuing a charter agreement for the vessel SCORPIO that will be used to augment the Vallejo fleet while the INTINTOLI and MARE ISLAND are in Washington State for repower.

On Friday, December 17th the City conducted trial trips from San Francisco and Vallejo to prove the transit times and to check compatibility with Vallejo ferry infrastructure.  It has been determined that the transit time will be on the order of 1 hour and 15 minutes versus the 1 hour transit time for Vallejo vessels.  The SCORPIO was found to be mostly compatible with existing ferry infrastructure, with only minor changes required.

Next steps include:
  • INTINTOLI removed from service on December 27th in order to make preparations for ocean transit to Whidbey Island, Washington … vessel will depart on first weather window following the new year
  • WETA Board of Directors to consider a charter agreement for SCORPIO to the City on January 6th
  • Vallejo City Council to consider a charter agreement for SCORPIO from WETA on January 11th
  • Vallejo City Council to amend the Blue & Gold Fleet operating contract adding SCORPIO to the Vallejo fleet, also on January 11th
  • WETA to make vessel ready for Vallejo operations by January 14th pending Board and Council approvals
  • Blue & Gold Fleet complete necessary infrastructure changes and crew training by January 21st
  • SCORPIO ready for backup ferry service duty in Vallejo starting January 24th
In the interim, the City will operate the existing weekday ferry schedule with three vessels starting December 27th and will utilize backup buses if a ferry has to be taken out of service for repairs.

Planned preventative maintenance and non-critical repairs will be deferred until the SCORPIO is ready for service.  Due to the slower operating speed of SCORPIO and her reduced passenger capacity of 199 (inside seating for 122 passengers), the weekday ferry operating schedule will be changed effective January 24th as shown below.  It is anticipated that SCORPIO will only see service about 20% of the time during the repower period January 2011 to February 2012.  On average, the vessel will likely operate only 1 to 2 days per week.

The City will be taking comments and input on the proposed schedule changes from now until final implementation.  Additionally, the City has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the modified repower schedule on Thursday, January 13th from 5:00pm to 7:30pm in the Vallejo City Council Chamber.  Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
