City of Vallejo Baylink Ferry Service – Rider Update – Proposed Repower Schedule

The following Frequently Asked Questions are provided regarding the Ferry Repower Schedule scheduled to go into effect on Monday, January 24th:

Why does the schedule have to change?

The City will be using the M/V SCORPIO as our fourth boat during the repower project.  SCORPIO is both slower (27 knots vs. 32 knots) and smaller (199 passengers total, 122 indoor seats vs. 300 passengers total, 298 indoors seats).  Due to the reduced service speed, the schedule had to be adjusted in order to account for the longer trip times required for SCORPIO.  Times shown in RED on the attached schedule represent the changes to the current Baylink schedule.  We have maintained all morning and afternoon commute departure times.

Where in the schedule will SCORPIO be used?

So that the entire Baylink schedule did not have to be changed, we will limit the use of SCORPIO to Boat #3 in the schedule lineup.  Boat #3 serves the sailing times shown with an asterisk (*) on the proposed schedule.  The MARE ISLAND, SOLANO, or VALLEJO will be assigned as Boat #1 and Boat #2 when SCORPIO is used, depending on which of those vessels is offline for maintenance or repair.

How often will SCORPIO be in the lineup?

Initially, the SCORPIO will be used quite a bit as we catch up on some deferred maintenance and repairs to SOLANO and VALLEJO.  By April or so, the use of SCORPIO will revert to an “only as needed” basis.  Over the entire course of the repower project we anticipate that SCORPIO will be used no more than 25% of the time.

How long is the repower schedule going to be in effect?

The INTINTOLI will be back in service by August 2011, the MARE ISLAND will then undergo repower and she will be back in service by April 2012.  At that time the repower schedule will revert to our normal ferry schedule and SCORPIO will be returned to WETA.

What are the impacts of the lower passenger and indoor seating capacities of SCORPIO?

Due to United States Coast Guard regulations, we can only board 199 passengers on SCORPIO versus 300 passengers for all other Baylink boats.  Also, there are only 122 indoor seats on SCORPIO … much less than the existing fleet.  The outdoor seating areas are heated, but we realize that many passengers will prefer to not ride outside.  To mitigate these effects, the City will be backing up the SCORPIO with buses as indicated on the proposed schedule.  While boarding of the SCORPIO is underway, the deckhands will advise passengers when we have boarded 122 passengers.  This will give the riders the choice of sitting outside, or opting for the backup bus instead.
